WhatsApp restricted or banned? What it means and what to do next

WhatsApp uses three different messages, and each one is handled differently: your account is restricted, temporarily banned, or banned. Work out which one you have first. This guide explains the three using WhatsApp's own Help Center, what it says can cause them, and what you can safely do. It does not offer tricks, because nobody except WhatsApp can lift a restriction or a ban.

Key takeaways
  • A restriction ("Your account is restricted right now") ends by itself and needs no action. You can still chat with existing contacts, but not start chats with new ones.
  • "Temporarily banned" points to an unofficial WhatsApp app or scraping: switch to the official app and stop the scraping.
  • "This phone number can't use WhatsApp" is a ban. Tap Request review once; WhatsApp says most reviews are completed within 24 hours.
  • Only WhatsApp can lift a restriction or a ban. Third-party "unban" services can't.

SheetMind AI is an independent company and is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta. This is general information, not legal advice, and it can't lift a ban or restriction: only WhatsApp (and, for the Business Platform, Meta) can do that. Rules change, so check the linked official pages for the latest.

Restricted, temporarily banned or banned: which one do you have?

The three messages WhatsApp shows, and what each means
What you seeWhat it meansWhat you can do
"Your account is restricted right now" or "Your account may be restricted soon"A temporary limit. WhatsApp says recent activity may show signs of spam, automated or bulk messaging. It is not a ban.Nothing removes it early: it ends on its own when the time runs out, and WhatsApp sends a notification. Meanwhile you can still chat with contacts and groups you have talked to before, but you can't start chats or calls with new contacts, create groups, add people to groups or use linked devices.
"Temporarily banned"WhatsApp says this can mean you are using an unofficial version of WhatsApp, or harvesting (scraping) information.Switch to the official app and stop any scraping. WhatsApp warns that if you don't, the account might be banned permanently. Details: WhatsApp "temporarily banned": what it means and how to fix it.
"This phone number can't use WhatsApp"The number is banned. WhatsApp bans accounts when activity breaks its Terms of Service, for example spam, scams or putting other users' safety at risk. On a new number, the previous owner may have caused the ban.Tap Request review in the app. WhatsApp says most reviews are completed within 24 hours. If there is no Request review option, the ban is final and can't be appealed.

Seeing "Account locked due to inactivity" instead? That is a different problem: re-register your number on WhatsApp as soon as possible, or the account and its data may be deleted. Source: WhatsApp Help Center.

How long does a restriction last?

WhatsApp's Help Center does not give a fixed length. It says the restriction ends automatically once the allocated time passes. To see how much time is left, open New chat and select a contact you have never chatted with: if your account is still restricted, the pop-up shows the time remaining. You do not need to do anything to end it, and there is nothing you can do to end it sooner.

What can cause a restriction or ban

WhatsApp's "How to use WhatsApp responsibly" page lists what can get an account banned. The same kinds of activity are what a restriction is warning about:

WhatsApp does not publish the exact signals or thresholds it uses, so nobody outside WhatsApp can tell you precisely what triggered your account. Be wary of anyone who claims to know.

Mistakes also happen. When many accounts were put under review for about 24 hours in August 2026, a WhatsApp spokesperson was reported as saying its enforcement systems sometimes get it wrong, and that it works to restore accounts flagged by mistake (Gulf News report). If you believe your ban was a mistake, the in-app review is the way to say so.

What to do next, step by step

  1. Read the exact message. Match it to the table above. The right next step depends on whether it is a restriction, a temporary ban or a ban.
  2. If you are restricted, let it end. Check the time remaining as described above, and until it ends keep to conversations with people you already chat with.
  3. Pause anything that could look like bulk or automated sending. That includes scheduled senders, bots, auto-replies from other apps, broadcast lists and adding people to groups. See the list of causes above.
  4. Use only the official app. Download WhatsApp or the WhatsApp Business app from WhatsApp's website or an official app store, and uninstall any modified or unofficial version.
  5. If you are banned, request a review once, in the app. WhatsApp reviews one phone number per appeal, tells you the decision by notification, and says that contacting WhatsApp outside the review process, or through another person's account, won't speed it up or change the decision.
  6. If you were unbanned, verify your number again to get back in. While an account is banned you can't access chat history or backups; a backup is available again only after the number is unbanned. WhatsApp explains the steps in After your account is unbanned.
  7. If there is no review option, the ban is final under WhatsApp's rules and can't be appealed.

After you request a review

What will not help, and can make things worse

Is it a business account?

The WhatsApp Business app follows the same ban and review process, plus WhatsApp's Business Messaging and Commerce policies. Accounts that use the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API used by software) are handled through Meta instead, and WhatsApp Support does not help with them. We explain both in WhatsApp Business account restricted: app vs Business Platform.

Questions people ask

Is a restricted account the same as a banned account?

No. A restriction is temporary and lifts by itself. A ban shows "This phone number can't use WhatsApp" and, unless a review is granted, is permanent. WhatsApp does warn that accounts engaging in spam, automated or bulk messaging can be banned.

Can I remove a WhatsApp restriction myself?

According to WhatsApp, you don't need to take any action: the restriction ends automatically after the allocated time, and you get a notification when it does.

What happens to my chats if I'm banned?

You can't access your chat history or backups while the account is banned. After the number is unbanned you verify it again and can restore from a backup tied to that number.

What does "Your account may be restricted soon" mean?

It is a warning. WhatsApp says recent activity on the account may show signs of spam, automated or bulk messaging. Slow down, stop anything automated and stick to people who expect to hear from you, because a restriction (and, if it continues, a ban) can follow.

Can I still reply to customers while my account is restricted?

You can keep chatting with contacts and groups you have exchanged messages with before. You can't start chats or calls with new contacts, create groups, add people to groups or use linked devices until the restriction ends.

WhatsApp banned my account for no reason. What can I do?

Tap Request review in the app, once. WhatsApp says reviews apply to one phone number each, and that a ban found to be a mistake is removed. If you don't see a Request review option, WhatsApp says the ban is final.

Can SheetMind AI unban my number?

No. Only WhatsApp can lift a ban or restriction, and nobody else can speed it up. The guides on this site are general information, and SheetMind AI is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.

Using WhatsApp for your business?

If your team messages customers on WhatsApp, the safest approach is to work inside WhatsApp's rules from the start. SheetMind AI connects your numbers through Meta's official WhatsApp Business Platform and helps your team respect the 24-hour reply window and template rules. It can't lift an existing ban, and no tool can promise an account will never be restricted.
