How to appeal a WhatsApp ban: the official steps for the app and the Business Platform
If WhatsApp has banned a number, there is one official way to challenge it, and which one depends on the product: Request review in the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app, or Request Review in Meta's Business Support Home for the WhatsApp Business Platform. Nobody else can file it for you or lift the ban. This guide gives the steps, what to expect, and the mistakes that waste your one clear request.
- Ban in the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app: tap Request review once. WhatsApp says most reviews are completed within 24 hours.
- Violation, restriction or lock on the WhatsApp Business Platform (API): use Request Review in Meta's Business Support Home. Meta says a decision typically arrives within 24 to 48 hours.
- No Request review option means WhatsApp treats the ban as final and can't be appealed.
- Third-party services can't lift a ban, and WhatsApp says contacting it outside the review process won't speed things up or change the decision.
SheetMind AI is an independent company and is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta. This is general information, not legal advice, and it can't lift a ban or restriction: only WhatsApp (and, for the Business Platform, Meta) can do that. Rules change, so check the linked official pages for the latest.
Is this a situation for an appeal?
| What you see | Appeal? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Your account is restricted right now" | Not needed | The restriction ends by itself and WhatsApp notifies you. See WhatsApp restricted or banned: what it means and what to do. |
| "Temporarily banned" or "You need the official WhatsApp to log in" | Not the route | Switch to the official app or stop scraping, as WhatsApp asks. See WhatsApp "temporarily banned": what it means and how to fix it. |
| "This phone number can't use WhatsApp" | Yes, if the app shows Request review | Follow the in-app steps below. |
| A violation, restriction or account lock shown in Meta's Business Support Home (WhatsApp Business Platform) | Yes, in Business Support Home (not every violation can be appealed) | Follow the Business Platform steps below. |
Appeal a ban in the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app
- Open the app and read the message. A ban shows "This phone number can't use WhatsApp" followed by your number. WhatsApp says you can request a review of the number, and that most reviews are completed within 24 hours.
- Tap Request review. If you think the ban was a mistake, this is the only official way to say so. If there is no Request review option, WhatsApp says the ban is final and can't be appealed.
- Wait for the notification. WhatsApp tells you when it has reviewed the account and made a decision. You can check the status by opening the app.
- Don't file again from elsewhere. WhatsApp reviews one phone number per appeal, and says contacting it outside the review process, or through another person's account, won't expedite the review or change the decision.
- If the ban is lifted, you will see "This account can now use WhatsApp" and need to verify your phone number to get back in. See After your account is unbanned.
WhatsApp's instructions for the in-app review describe only the Request review button. They don't mention a box for explanations or a way to attach documents, so there is nothing to prepare for it except making sure the cause is gone. The same steps apply to the WhatsApp Business app, and a banned Business app account also loses its Meta Verified subscription (WhatsApp Business app bans).
Appeal a violation on the WhatsApp Business Platform
WhatsApp says its own support does not handle bans and restrictions on the Business Platform. They go through Meta, and the review happens in Business Support Home. Meta's documentation describes it like this:
- In Meta Business Suite or Business Manager, open All tools, then Business Support Home. Restrictions, next steps and review requests appear there.
- Select the messaging account the violation belongs to.
- Choose the violation and click Request Review.
- Add supporting details in the dialog and click Submit. The item moves to the In Review tab.
- The decision arrives through Business Manager, typically within 24 to 48 hours. The violation is either Unchanged or Reversed.
Meta adds that restricted or disabled accounts can still appeal or acknowledge violations, that not all spam violations can be appealed, and that some businesses may have to wait out the restriction period. Violations also reach you in the Business Manager Notifications Center, as a banner in WhatsApp Manager, by email to Business Manager admins and by the account_update webhook, so make sure someone is watching them. If your numbers are connected through a software provider, check what access you have to Business Support Home: the decision is Meta's, not the provider's. What to include in a Platform appeal
Meta's page only says to enter supporting details. What follows is our general advice, not a Meta requirement:
- Say what happened, factually. What was sent, to whom, in which template and when.
- Show how people opted in. The method, the date and what they were told they would receive. Meta's opt-in page doesn't require you to keep proof, but proof is what a reviewer can actually assess.
- Say what you changed. Template wording or category, sending frequency, how opt-outs are handled, tools you stopped using.
- Keep it short and calm. Arguments and pressure don't change the policy being applied.
- Submit once. Then wait for the decision in the In Review tab.
How long does an appeal take?
WhatsApp says most app reviews are completed within 24 hours. Meta says Platform decisions typically take 24 to 48 hours. Both are typical times, not promises. Treat any other figure, such as "3 to 7 business days" or "72 hours", as unconfirmed: neither company publishes it.
Why there is no email template here
Many guides offer a template email to send to WhatsApp. We don't, because WhatsApp's own help page says contacting it outside the review process won't speed up or change the decision, and that third-party services can't ban or unban an account. The review button, or Business Support Home for the Platform, is the process. Anyone selling a faster route is selling something WhatsApp says doesn't exist.
If the appeal doesn't succeed
- In the app: if the ban stays, or there was never a Request review option, WhatsApp treats it as final.
- On the Platform: if the violation stays Unchanged, Meta's escalation steps continue if violations repeat: warnings, then blocks on sending, then an account lock, and finally removal from the platform. Fix the cause first. See WhatsApp Business account restricted: app vs Business Platform.
- Don't carry the same activity to a new number. It usually brings the same result, and WhatsApp lists creating accounts in unauthorised or automated ways among the practices to avoid. See WhatsApp restricted again and again: why it keeps happening.
Questions people ask
Can I appeal a permanent ban?
Only if the app shows a Request review option. WhatsApp says that without that option the ban is final and can't be appealed.
Does WhatsApp Support help with a WhatsApp Business Platform ban?
No. WhatsApp says it doesn't provide support for bans and restrictions on the Business Platform. Businesses use Meta's Business Support Home and the Meta Business Help Center.
How many times can I appeal?
WhatsApp doesn't publish a limit. Its page says each appeal reviews one phone number, and the safest approach is one clear request followed by waiting for the answer.
Can a third-party service get my number unbanned?
No. WhatsApp states that third-party services can't ban your account or remove a ban. Only WhatsApp can.
Can SheetMind AI appeal a ban for me?
No. SheetMind AI is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta and can't file or influence an appeal.
Want to reduce the chance of a next time?
SheetMind AI connects your numbers through Meta's official WhatsApp Business Platform and helps your team respect the 24-hour reply window and template rules. It can't appeal or lift a ban, and no tool can promise an account will never be restricted.
