WhatsApp says "temporarily banned": what it means and how to fix it
A "Temporarily banned" message is different from a restriction. WhatsApp says it can mean you are using an unofficial version of WhatsApp, or harvesting (scraping) information. The fix it gives is to switch to the official app, or stop the scraping, and it warns that the account might be banned permanently if you don't.
- "Temporarily banned" is WhatsApp telling you to stop using an unofficial app, or to stop scraping.
- Uninstall every unofficial app, install the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app from WhatsApp's website or an official app store, and register again.
- If you don't switch, WhatsApp says the account might be banned permanently.
- Only chat history created in the official app can be securely backed up; a transfer from an unofficial app isn't guaranteed.
SheetMind AI is an independent company and is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta. This is general information, not legal advice, and it can't lift a ban or restriction: only WhatsApp (and, for the Business Platform, Meta) can do that. Rules change, so check the linked official pages for the latest.
What the message means
WhatsApp's Help Center describes two messages that come from the same cause. If you use an unofficial app you may see "You need the official WhatsApp to log in" or "You have been logged out for using an unofficial app". A "Temporarily banned" message can appear in the same situation, or when WhatsApp detects scraping. It is a warning ban: WhatsApp is telling you to change what you are doing while you still can.
If your screen instead says "Your account is restricted right now", that is a separate, automatic limit that ends by itself. See WhatsApp restricted or banned: what it means and what to do for the difference, and WhatsApp restricted again and again: why it keeps happening if restrictions keep returning.
The two causes WhatsApp names
1. An unofficial or modified WhatsApp app
WhatsApp calls these fake WhatsApp apps made by third parties. Using them, or linking your account to them, violates its Terms of Service. It names GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp, TeleMessage and TM WhatsApp as examples ("and others"). WhatsApp does not support them because it can't validate their security or privacy practices, and it warns that they might carry malware, that there is no guarantee your messages or files stay private, and that your account might be banned or restricted.
2. Scraping (harvesting)
Scraping is the automated extraction of information, targeted or at scale, for purposes WhatsApp hasn't permitted: for example collecting phone numbers, profile pictures or statuses. WhatsApp says acquiring user information this way violates its Terms of Service.
How to fix it, step by step
- Stop the cause. Stop using the unofficial app, and stop any tool that extracts numbers, pictures or statuses from WhatsApp.
- Uninstall every unofficial WhatsApp app from the device before you install the official one. WhatsApp asks you to do this for your safety and to avoid account access issues.
- Install the official app. Download WhatsApp or the WhatsApp Business app from WhatsApp's own website or an official app store, then register your phone number again.
- If you now see "This phone number can't use WhatsApp", the number has been banned. Tap Request review once in the app. Most reviews are completed within 24 hours, and if there is no review option the ban is final. See WhatsApp restricted or banned: what it means and what to do for what happens next.
- Don't wait it out while still using the unofficial app. A ban timer ending doesn't change the rule: WhatsApp says the account may be banned permanently if you don't switch to the official app.
WhatsApp's Help Center doesn't state how long a temporary ban lasts, so treat any specific number of hours or days you read elsewhere as unconfirmed.
What about your chats?
WhatsApp says only chat history created while using the official app can be securely backed up. If you backed up chats in an unofficial app, WhatsApp can't guarantee that the history will transfer, because it doesn't support unofficial apps. Third-party guides explain how to move data between apps; we can't vouch for them, so check what your current app can export before you uninstall it.
If you don't switch
WhatsApp's wording is direct: if you don't switch to the official app (or stop scraping) after a temporary ban, your account might be permanently banned. It also says an account ban for using an unauthorized app can be reinstated if the account activity continues to violate its Terms of Service. A permanent ban can only be challenged through Request review, and only when that option is shown.
Using WhatsApp for business
Many businesses reach for modified apps or bulk-sending tools because the official WhatsApp app wasn't built for team inboxes or large-scale messaging. The supported alternative is the WhatsApp Business Platform, which works through Meta with opt-in, approved message templates and published messaging limits. We explain the options in WhatsApp Business account restricted: app vs Business Platform and compare the two products in WhatsApp Business app vs Business Platform (API).
Questions people ask
Is "temporarily banned" the same as "restricted"?
No. A restriction is an automatic limit that ends by itself, for activity that looks like spam, automated or bulk messaging. A "temporarily banned" message points to an unofficial app or scraping, and WhatsApp asks you to change what you are doing.
Can I keep using GB WhatsApp if I wait for the ban to end?
WhatsApp says to uninstall unofficial apps and use the official one, and warns of a possible permanent ban if you don't. It doesn't offer a way to keep using an unofficial app safely.
Will I lose my chats?
That can't be promised either way. WhatsApp says only chat history created in the official app can be securely backed up, and it can't guarantee that history from an unofficial app will transfer.
Does a temporary ban turn into a permanent one?
It can. WhatsApp says the account might be permanently banned if you don't switch to the official app or stop scraping.
Can SheetMind AI lift a ban?
No. Only WhatsApp can lift a ban or restriction. SheetMind AI is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.
Need a supported way to run WhatsApp for a team?
SheetMind AI connects WhatsApp numbers through Meta's official WhatsApp Business Platform, with one shared inbox for your team, instead of modified apps or unofficial tools. It can't lift an existing ban, and no tool can promise an account will never be restricted.
